Athearn has announced a new run of its N scale 50’ FMC 5277 combination-door box car.
Schemes include Railbox (ABOX) in early and late schemes, in standard and weathered Primed for Grime versions; Canadian National in the brown-and-white repaint and a Primed for Grime ex-Railbox patch; and Minnesota, Dakota & Western in green-and-white and Mineral Red. Each scheme comes in two road numbers. MSRP is $34.99, or $39.99 for Primed for Grime cars.
Features include a scale-profile brake wheel, screw-mounted roller-bearing trucks with machined metal wheels, McHenry knuckle couplers, and a weight for good tracking. The cars run on code 55 and 80 rail with a 9.75-inch minimum radius.
FMC built many 50’ outside-post box cars with non-terminating ends during the per diem box car boom of the mid-1970s, in a range of door arrangements, and many were lettered for short lines. Cars of this type are still in service.
The reservation deadline is October 31, 2026, with delivery expected in February 2028.
