Kato USA has announced a newly tooled N scale Pioneer Zephyr 3-car set. The model follows the CB&Q streamliner as displayed at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry: RPO power car, baggage/buffet coach, and observation, sold as a 3-car bookcase set.
Model features from Kato include a DCC-friendly mechanism with speaker space in the baggage compartment, directional golden-white LED headlights and taillights, blackened metal wheels with all-wheel pickup, and compatibility with Kato lighting kits. Versions include DC, DCC, and DCC with lights.
On the prototype side, Kato notes the Zephyr’s May 26, 1934 Denver–Chicago run (about 1,015 miles in roughly 13 hours), its place as the first of nine Burlington Zephyrs, retirement in 1960, and later donation to MSI.
